This is How We Roux It!

By Megan M. Duhon | Chamber Announcements, Events, Gumbo Cook-Off, Member News, News | Comments are Closed | 30 October, 2018 | 0

Teams began at the crack of dawn— 6 AM was an early, but crucial start for the 15th Annual Gumbo Cook-Off at the Rayne Frog Festival Pavilion. Acadia Parish Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and staff, volunteers, and teams began unloading and setting up for an exciting day ahead. At 7 AM teams could begin boiling water, and 30 minutes later they began making thier roux. This year, we welcomed 15 teams who prepared 17 different gumbos within the categories of: Non Seafood Jar Roux, Seafood Jar Roux, Non Seafood Homemade Roux, and Seafood Homemade Roux. These teams were businesses and individuals from across Acadia Parish, who were either new or returning competitors.

Radio Zydeco took the stage just before gumbo was ready to be served. On lead vocals and accordion, Billy Mack, and his band provided the perfect entertainment to get you dancing and singing along! We welcomed judges from near and far, and many with extensive culinary backgrounds. Judges were: Taylor Trache with News 15, City of Rayne Mayor Chuck Robichaux, Paul Ayo owner of Avec Bacon, Tiffany Decou and Bob Borel of Lafayette Food Junkie. Congratulations to all who took home a victory!

We would like to once again thank all of our sponsors, especially our title sponsors Shop Rite, Tobacco Plus and Church Point Wholesale. We had wonderful volunteers from Lamm Family Care Home Health and Hospice, Acadia General Hospital, Notre Dame High School, Crowley FFA, and many others who made our event run so efficiently!
