EXCEL’s Legislative Visit to Baton Rouge: Advocating for Acadiana

    By Elizabeth Miller | Leadership Excel | Comments are Closed | 17 April, 2025 | 0

On April 15–16, Leadership Excels took its annual legislative trip to Baton Rouge, immersing participants in a dynamic and inspiring two-day experience focused on advocacy, education, and regional impact. The visit offered participants the opportunity to engage with key stakeholders, learn about pressing legislative issues, and represent the voice of Acadiana in the state’s capital.

Day One: Coastal Innovation & Regional Connection

The visit began Tuesday afternoon with a tour of the LSU Coastal Ecosystem Design Studio. This cutting-edge facility plays a pivotal role in helping communities across Louisiana build comprehensive resiliency plans in the face of environmental challenges. By blending science, planning, and design, the studio supports local efforts to strengthen infrastructure and prepare for environmental threats. Leadership Excels members engaged with experts on how this work directly supports sustainable futures for regions like Acadiana.

Next, the group walked over to the LSU Center for River Studies, home to one of the most advanced river models in the country. The interactive experience gave participants a firsthand look at how river dynamics impact Louisiana’s coastal strategies, infrastructure, and environmental planning. It was a powerful demonstration of the science behind protecting one of the state’s most critical natural assets.

The evening concluded with a warm and engaging cocktail reception with the Acadiana Delegation. This networking event provided an opportunity for candid conversations and collaboration between regional leaders and state policymakers, reinforcing a shared vision for progress in Acadiana.

Day Two: Advocacy in Action at the Capitol

Wednesday kicked off with a quick breakfast before the group made their way to the Louisiana State Capitol. The day began in the Member’s Lounge, where Leadership EXCEL was welcomed by state leaders and given an overview of the legislative process, along with insights into the importance of regional representation. Representatives Chance Henry and Ryan Bourriaque shared committee updates on Insurance, Agriculture, Ways & Means, and Transportation. Director of Capitol Security, Terry Alario, briefed the group on recent security enhancements and shared how he has significantly transformed the safety measures at the Capitol in under a year.

Participants then took part in committee meetings, observing real-time discussions on the laws and policies shaping Louisiana’s future. This was followed by a lobbying lunch at Longview with Haynie & Associates, where members received practical insights on effectively communicating regional priorities and building strong legislative relationships. The group also heard from Representative Troy Romero, who provided an inside look at the workings of the Capitol and shared an update on the Agriculture Committee.

The afternoon continued with a guided Capitol tour, offering insight into Louisiana’s rich political history and architectural beauty. A highlight of the visit came during the session observation, where Leadership EXCEL was recognized in the House of Representatives chambers—a proud and unifying moment for the group. The class also had the opportunity to visit Representative Romero’s office, within the offices of the Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Committees, further deepening their understanding of the legislative process and the critical work being done on behalf of Louisiana’s communities.

The visit wrapped up with a group photo on the Capitol steps, capturing the energy, pride, and purpose of the Acadiana delegation before heading back home.

    Inspiration, Impact, and Next Steps

This legislative visit was more than a trip; it was a powerful reminder of the impact local leadership can have on state policy. With stronger relationships, deeper understanding, and a renewed commitment to advocacy, Leadership Excels returns to Acadiana ready to drive meaningful change.

Leadership EXCEL stands for Experience in Community, Enterprise and Leadership. The program is designed to prepare emerging leaders to meet the future leadership needs of our community. Through the exchange of viewpoints and experiences, participants are exposed to the challenges, opportunities, and vital issues affecting Acadia and Jeff Davis parishes.

The EXCEL program is hosted by the Acadia Parish Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development in conjunction with the Jeff Davis Chamber of Commerce and thanks to the following sponsors who support the 2025 program: First National Bank, Bank of Commerce, JD Bank, Acadia Parish Tourist Commission, Acadia Parish Farm Bureau – Suzy Webb, City of Crowley, Elder Outreach, First South Farm Credit, Jeff Davis Co-Op, and Sabelhaus Wealth Partners.
