In recognition of the need to develop leaders for the future who have a clear understanding of the region and are committed to its advancement, in 1994 the Acadia Parish (formerly Crowley) Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Jeff Davis Chamber of Commerce created Leadership EXCEL.
The program begins with a two day orientation in January, continuing through the year with a full day scheduled session, and accumulating in a wrap-up session and graduation in November.
The experience based training sessions are conducted by recognized leaders whose decisions affect the region in areas such as economic development, business, labor, human services, education, law and justice, government and the media.
The program content is designed to give each participant training in leadership skills and increase their knowledge of the community and state, while encouraging participation in study groups to transfer the skills learned to actual community application.
Program content includes skill seminars, on such topics as team building, conducting effective meetings, decision making, delegating, media relations and organizational communication, and community awareness programs, on such issues as the environment, state and local government, the education system, the judicial system and the criminal justice system.
A class of 20-25 men and women will be selected from the applicants to represent a cross-section of our region: business, the professions, government, education, religion, civic groups, the arts, minority organizations, and community groups. Business, civic groups and churches are invited to nominate candidates; interested individuals are invited to apply.
The Selection Committee will consider those applicants who:
Show a strong possibility of achieving senior policy-shaping positions in their employment or volunteer organizations
Have demonstrated a commitment to the community through volunteer
If employed, have the endorsement of their employer
Provide a program designed to strengthen the potential leadership qualities of selected Chamber members and community representation
Provide these developing leaders with practical information concerning community problems and issues
Establish a communication network among the emerging and existing leaders of the community
Challenge these leaders to increase their involvement in community affairs
Place alumni on the boards of public or private organizations or agencies
The Leadership EXCEL Advisory Board is excited to announce the date for the 3rd Annual Social for Alumni & 2019 Class Participants. All Leadership EXCEL Alumni are invited to attend the Welcome Social set for Wednesday, March 20th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Zeus Crowley Banquet Room on the 2nd Floor. Over 500 community leaders from Acadia, Jeff Davis and St. Landry Parishes have graduated from this exemplary program and have moved on to achieve many great things since the inception of Leadership Excel in 1994. The Advisory Board is encouraging past participants to connect with former classmates, as well as share stories and experiences they enjoyed while going through the program.
