In June, Leadership EXCEL turned its focus to the economic engines that help drive our region to success. This immersive experience provided participants with valuable insights into the industries and businesses they, and most of our citizens, have touchpoints with almost daily but never knew the extent of.
The day began at the CLECO Alternative Center, where the group toured the facility and engaged with esteemed speakers. Dr. Mark Zappi, Ph.D., P.E., Executive Director of the UL Energy Institute of Louisiana, shared his expertise on energy innovations. Pat Witty, Executive Director of Community Competitiveness & Small Business Services, and Stacey Duvac, Director of Community Competitiveness, also addressed the group, offering perspectives on enhancing community competitiveness and supporting small businesses.
Next, the class visited Supreme Rice, where they toured the shipping department with Brent Jones. This segment provided a deep dive into the rice industry, highlighting Supreme Rice’s significant global impact. Participants learned about the intricacies of rice production and the company’s pivotal role in the local, state, national and international markets.
Following the rice industry exploration, Taylor Gray with JohnPac presented insights into the manufacturing sector. His discussion and facility tour shed light on the innovative processes and technologies driving modern manufacturing, offering the class a comprehensive understanding of this critical industry.
The day’s activities continued at Church Point Wholesale, where the group received a detailed tour of the facility and an overview of its expansive operations with Gary Duplechin.
The session concluded with presentations from economic development experts Megan Duhon of One Acadiana, Elizabeth Miller of the Acadia Parish Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development, and Creed Romano of Jeff Davis Parish Economic Development. Their discussions emphasized the strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts fueling economic growth in the region.
The Economic Development focus day was a resounding success, equipping the Leadership EXCEL class with knowledge and connections to further their leadership journey. The next event on the horizon is Southwest Louisiana Day on July 17, promising more opportunities for learning and engagement as they take a look at South Louisiana as a super region.
The Leadership EXCEL class continues to foster growth and development among its members, driving positive change throughout Jeff Davis and Acadia Parishes. Stay tuned for more updates on their exciting year!
