Hurricane Preparedness for Business Owners in Acadia Parish

As we enter hurricane season, it’s crucial for business owners to be well-prepared to protect their employees, assets, and operations. According to a study by FEMA and the Department of Labor, 40% of small businesses will not reopen in the immediate aftermath of a hurricane and just one year later, 25% of those that did will end up closing their doors.

Hurricanes can cause significant disruption, but with proper planning, businesses can mitigate risks and ensure a quicker recovery. Here’s a basic guide to help you prepare your business for the upcoming hurricane season.

    1. Develop a Comprehensive Emergency Plan

Create a detailed emergency plan that includes:

    • Evacuation Routes and Procedures: Identify safe evacuation routes and establish procedures for employees. If necessary, determine essential employees and your expectations for safe return to business operations.
    • Communication Plan: Ensure you have an effective communication plan to keep in touch with employees, customers, and local authorities.
    • Essential Contacts: Compile a list of essential contacts, including local emergency services, suppliers, and key customers.

    2. Backup Critical Data

Ensure all critical data is backed up regularly and securely. Consider cloud storage solutions or off-site backups to prevent data loss.

    3. Secure Physical Premises

Take steps to protect your physical location:

    • Reinforce Windows and Doors: Install storm shutters or plywood to protect windows and doors. If you are a renter, communicate with your landlord about their plans for securing the building.
    • Elevate Equipment: Elevate critical equipment and inventory off the ground to protect against flooding.
    • Anchor Outdoor Items: Secure outdoor furniture and equipment to prevent them from becoming projectiles.

    4. Review Insurance Coverage

Review your insurance policies to ensure you have adequate coverage for hurricane-related damages. When in doubt, ask your agent. Being fully versed on your coverage beforehand can help you file claims properly and understand your obligations in the event of a loss.

    5. Stay Informed

Stay updated on weather forecasts and local advisories. Utilize local resources for timely information:

    • Acadia Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) and Acadia Parish Police Jury: Visit their websites and social media for up to date information.
    • National Hurricane Center (NHC): Follow the NHC for official hurricane forecasts and updates.
    • Local News Outlets: Tune in to local news for real-time updates and emergency instructions.

    7. Employee Preparedness

Ensure your employees are also prepared:

    • Provide training on emergency procedures.
    • Encourage them to have personal emergency plans and supply kits.
    • Communicate your business’s emergency plans and procedures clearly.

    8. Recovery Plan

Develop a post-hurricane recovery plan to resume operations as quickly as possible. This plan should include:

    • Steps for damage assessment and repairs
    • Contact information for contractors and repair services
    • Strategies for communicating with customers and suppliers during the recovery phase

By taking these steps, business owners in Acadia Parish can better protect their businesses and ensure a more resilient recovery in the event of a hurricane. Remember, preparedness is key to minimizing the impact of natural disasters.
