Earlier this month, the 2025 Leadership EXCEL class spent the day immersed in the vibrant stories, sights, and sounds that make up the cultural backbone of our region. From historic city halls to art-filled downtowns, Arts, Culture & Tourism Day offered an unforgettable journey through the past, present, and future of local heritage.
The day kicked off at Crowley City Hall, where participants enjoyed breakfast before diving into the area’s rich cultural roots. Marietta Leonards shared the enduring legacy of the Roberts Cove German Fest, followed by International Rice Festival Director Shanna Monk, who highlighted how the festival continues to celebrate Acadia Parish’s most iconic crop and community spirit.
Crowley historian Claire Doré then led the group on a “History Alive” walking tour, bringing downtown’s architectural charm and heritage to life. Just next door, Kim Fogleman opened the doors of the Grand Opera House of the South, showcasing one of Louisiana’s most stunningly restored cultural landmarks. The morning wrapped up with Martha Royer’s lively storytelling on the History of Rayne, affectionately known as the “Frog Capital of the World.”
After a short drive west, the class arrived in Welsh for a Lunch & Learn featuring the Acadia and Jeff Davis Parish Tourism offices at Red Cardinal Café. The session spotlighted how regional collaboration is strengthening tourism development and drawing new visitors to rural Louisiana.
The afternoon continued with a stop at Mr. Clint’s, a local treasure in Welsh, before heading to the Gator Chateau, where Kaylee introduced the group to rescued baby alligators and shared the unique role of wildlife tourism in Jeff Davis Parish.
In Jennings, participants explored a trifecta of culture—beginning with the nostalgic Tupper Museum, followed by a backstage look at the Strand Theater with Mrs. Glenetta, and a stroll through downtown’s gems like the Zigler Art Museum, Southern Crumbs, Rosebuds, Heywood, and Main Street Antiques.
The day concluded at TwoTwoOne Wine Bar, a hub for Jennings’ downtown revitalization. Taylor Henry shared the mission of Cadien Toujours, preserving and promoting Cajun heritage, while owner Alexa Dubreuil discussed the entrepreneurial energy reshaping Jennings’ Main Street.
The class ended the day with a debrief and social hour at TwoTwoOne—reflecting on how arts, culture, and tourism intertwine to not only preserve local traditions but also fuel economic development, small business growth, and community pride.
