The Acadia Parish Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that Louise Morrow has been selected as the Humanitarian of the Year for 2019.
Louise Landry Morrow has been a resident of Crowley all of her life. She is the fourth child of Wilfred and Budzie Daboval Landry, now deceased. After graduating St. Michael High school, she attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute, until her marriage to Theo “Topot” Morrow. Together they have three children: Ted Morrow of Crowley, Catherine Hodges of Crowley, and Patricia Morrow Hebert of Lafayette.
Louise Landry Morrow has been a compassionate volunteer in Crowley throughout her adult life. And now at age 90, she remains actively engaged in serving others. She was employed as an executive secretary at Bank of Commerce in Crowley for 26 years until her retirement in 1993, where her friendly face greeted customers.
While her children were in school, she was involved in numerous school activities and functions. As members of the St. Michael High School Athletic Club, she and her late husband cooked many meals for all school athletes. She assisted with many of the activities of the local Cub Scouts and Campfire Girls.
A devout member of St. Michael Catholic Church, many of her volunteer endeavors centered around her church work. She has been actively involved with the Pastoral Committee, the Adoration Society, and the Rosary Group. As a Eucharistic Minister, she takes communion to the residents of Southwind Nursing Home and Assisted Living facility. She is a reader during church liturgies and a member of the Altar Society. As a member of St. Martha’s Guild, she helps provide meals for bereaved families. She has been instrumental in organizing many successful St. Michael School reunions.
In addition to her church work, Louise acted as secretary of the Crowley Planning Commission for 26 years. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, she was the secretary of the Crowley Chamber of Commerce and was involved as the coordinator of promoting Crowley as the Rice Capital of the World and the International Rice Festival.
A big supporter of educational programs, she participated in Ms Bea’s Reading Circle where she read stories to the students at Ross Elementary. A Pink Lady at Crowley’s American Legion Hospital, Louise served coffee and juice to patients and visitors and also worked in the Pink Ladies’ gift shop. As a member of the Crowley Three-Ten Club, she has participated in awarding an annual scholarship to a local high school senior and in making cash donations to the Opera House, the public library, Faith House, the cleanest city competition, Angel Tree, The Way, Empowering the Community for Excellence, and numerous other organization.
Since its inception, Louise has been a faithful volunteer at Miss Helen’s Soup Kitchen, assisting in serving meals free of charge to everyone who walks through the door. Besides her church and club-related volunteer activities, Louise spends much of her personal time ministering to the sick and those who need encouragement. She visits residents of both Southwind and Encore nursing homes, shut-ins who are housebound, and those who simply need a ray of sunshine in their lives.
The 2019 Acadia Parish Honors, our Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony, will be held on Wednesday, May 1st, at the Grand Opera House of the South. Guests will take a look back at the past year and get a sneak peek of what is to come for Acadia Parish’s business community. Current and outgoing Chamber Board Members and Chairman will also be recognized for their efforts.
In addition, we will award several individuals for their contributions to our community. Business Person of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year, and Acadia Parish’s Outstanding Young Citizens will be honored as well.
Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. for cocktails and a silent auction. Fezzo’s Seafood Steakhouse and Oyster Bar will serve dinner at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for the Acadia Parish Honors may be purchased here.
